One of the greatest infrastructure issues facing
the United States in the near future concerns water resources. Through our
hydrogeologic modeling, we provide quantitative answers to
questions such as:
Where is the water?
How do we keep it clean?
How do we protect it for future generations? These
are just a few of the important questions to be addressed as
both population and demand for limited resources
increase.
At Hazlett-Kincaid, we start with an
aquifer-based view of the world. However, traditional
hydrogeology and water resource work is well-based. The
conceptual model starts at the well, with cones of depression,
zones of capture, and travel times. This short-sighted
point-of-view has led to ineffective groundwater management
plans for several reasons.
First, many of the well-based models do not
consider a water balance. How can one plan future water use and
budgeting if one does not know how much water will be available
in the future? State-of-the art aquifer-based modeling allows us
to consider the possibilities of drought, overuse, or other
scenarios, all in the context of a water budget that is founded
on hard data.
Second, water resource studies are not
coordinated across political boundaries. This has lead to
different laws and regulations concerning groundwater use
everywhere one goes, especially in states like PA, where we are
located. Studies are performed with no relevance to events that
might be occurring outside the study area. A recent example we
witnessed involved a municipal water supply development project
along a political boundary. A neighboring political body placed
their well within a short distance an existing well in the other
township, because they did not know it existed. As a result, the
wells went dry and a lot of time and money were squandered.
At Hazlett-Kincaid, we believe that
quantitative groundwater models combined with sophisticated data
management practices will manage our water resources most
effectively, today and in the future.
