The Awesome Aquifer Adventure

As part of Hazlett-Kincaid's continuing involvement in not only cutting-edge science, but also public outreach and education, Hazlett-Kincaid this summer sponsored and developed a scientific museum exhibit entitled The Awesome Aquifer Adventure. The Grand Opening of the Awesome Aquifer Adventure will occur September 16, 2001 and the exhibit will run through March 24, 2002.

The exhibit components include posters which detail various aspects of both the science and the history and folklore surrounding groundwater. Hands-n exhibits will allow visitors to test their recently learned knowledge in a computer-based game. The tools of the hydrogeologist will also be on display. A sand tank model will demonstrate first-hand the concepts of groundwater flow, aquifers, aquitards, and and groundwater contamination. Lastly, movies of cave diving explorers will be on display.

At the conclusion of the exhibit run at the Reading Public Museum, we hope to lend out the exhibit to schools, other museums, and the like, in order to spread the word on groundwater education.

The exhibit was mostly created and designed by Robert Libutti, who was an intern at Hazlett-Kincaid this summer. Bob will be finishing his senior year at Lafayette College this year, majoring in Geology.

The Hydrogeology Consortium Fall Meeting: New Approaches to Modeling Flow and Fate and Transport in Karst Settings!

The Annual Workshop of the Hydrogeology Consortium will be held November 8th and 9th, 2001 in Orlando Florida.

  • Target Audience: Consortium members; FL.DEP and Water Management Districts staff interested in hazardous waste management, ground water protection and water resource assessment and conservation. Professionals with similar interests among the staff of counties and municipal governments, and scientists in academia, the private consulting community and the military.
  • Sponsors: The Hazardous Waste Regulation Section of the FL. DEP, FSU's Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Institute, and Hazlett-Kincaid, Inc.
  • Key Websites: For information on topics, please visit http://hydrogeologyconsortium.org/. You'll also find there information on the Consortium and its focus on modeling ground water flow and contaminants transport in karstic aquifers.
  • Format: Over a period of two days, 4 topics related to the cutting-edge of thought and practice on modeling and data issues in karst settings will be discussed.
  • The topics are:
    1. Problems in Applying Groundwater Flow Models in Karst Settings: Issues, Shortcomings, and New Approaches;
    2. Characterization of karst sites: Data limitations and needs, acquisition techniques and costs, optimizing data use;
    3. Pollutant Behavior and Fate: Dispersion, Retardation, Sequestration, and Attenuation;
    4. and Groundwater and Surface Water Interaction and TMDL's: How to Model It?

Each of the four topics will be introduced and discussed in the morning of Day 1, with whole-audience participation. In the afternoon, expert moderators will lead break out discussion groups on each of the four topics. The break out sessions will be held in seminar rooms, with participants freely choosing which session to attend.

On the morning of Day 2, the leaders of each break out session will present to the entire audience the main issues discussed and any objectives that were established in their respective sessions.
